As a liberal political junkie, I could not restrain myself from watching tonight’s debate between John McCain and Barack Obama. Before the debate began, miscellaneous news casters and political analysts gave their opinions of what was to come. Would McCain blow Obama out of the water with fierce attacks? Would Obama blast McCain with smart remarks? The results of the debate is anyone’s guess. However, behind the heads of the loud-talking, opinionated people who were trying to convince viewers that they were right, people proudly held “ONE Campaign” signs as high as they could. Within the tangle of Obama supporters and McCain supporters was a silent reminder of what this election is truly about… people. Putting aside “blue” and “red” tendencies, the ONE Campaign brought to light the passion of millions of Americans to make a difference in this world. We are looking for change; we are ready for change.
As the debates quickly approached, I realized that God was among those ONE Campaign supporters in the crowd. God isn’t red or blue, but is instead represents all colors. God is yearning for us to remember ALL of creation and to care for it, whether we are liberal or conservative or somewhere in the middle. I pray that as November nears, we remember what is truly important, that all creation is loved and considered and keep in mind that we need to implement plans to care for them. On my campus at Luther College I am very active in political campaigning. However, I am making it my goal to not just focus on the idea of “red” and “blue” but instead keep in mind that caring for the people of this country and the world is what’s important. No matter what the results of the election turn out to be, I feel God is calling me to pray for whoever is elected, support them as they begin to lead our country, and to personally advocate for the rights of people around the world.
