My favorite quote(s)...
Whatever career you may choose for yourself--doctor, lawyer, teacher--let me propose an avocation to be pursued along with it. [...] Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.

-Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.-
Statement at Youth March for Integrated Schools, April 18, 1959, Washington, D.C.

Do not worry about your career. Concern yourself with your vocation, and that is to be lovers of Jesus.
-Mother Teresa-
If I could live anywhere... (why?)
I love the cities of the Midwest... Chicago, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities.... But I might be a Southern Belle at heart. I LOVE New Orleans!

I've loved every place I've ever been, especially any place where I can find and form community.
Others describe me as...
passionate, compassionate, self-aware, and stubborn.
I most feel the presence of God when...
I ride the "L" in Chicago, talk with total strangers about faith, worship at Pine Lake Camp, feel a breeze, sing Holden Evening Vespers, pray with friends.
I'm passionate about...
many, many, MANY things (too many), but to narrow it down: human rights (and therefore people, because they're what human rights are all about!).
In the future, I will be...
a parent, a child; a teacher, a student; a friend and advocate; a disciple of Christ.
My biggest struggle with discerning/following "my call" is...
trusting in God's plan and purpose while not having too many expectations of my own. I plan for the future way too much, but I'm learning that the best things in life cannot be planned. I am who I am and where I am not because of some grand scheme, but because of many "coincidences" and relationships.
A person/people who has/have helped me grow in my faith...
all of my campers week 9 at Pine Lake Camp 2006. Boundless love!
Because of my faith, I...
have hope.

Hi! Thanks for the welcome! I'm still getting used to this site. I've not met someone else who actually knew that quote. I forget where I found it, even.

Well basically my life right now is full of chaos and full of demands. I know as a teacher i'm going to have lots of demands from my students and fellow administrators but i'm fairly sure that my life will become less hectic the farther away from my family that i can get

Grace on the Bus

I just found this piece, dated from July:

The smell is embedded in my skin. It won’t go away. And neither will the memory.

They told me that Chicago couldn’t host a tornado because the city structure pauses the storm before any damage can be done. But as I sat in an amazing poetry class on the eastside, the tornado sirens went off.

An hour later, I was faced with the daunting task of riding two buses for 45 minutes back to Logan Square in the worst storm I had ever seen. With incessant… Continue

Discipleship

What does following Christ mean? What does total obedience to Jesus look like? What does it mean to be a disciple in the post-modern world? In today's Christian culture, I can't help but wonder if "discipleship" has come to represent what we DON'T do instead of what we DO... and of course, as Lutherans, we shy away from emphasizing works. But reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer's chapter on "Costly Grace" struck a new chord in me: "The only man who has the right to say that he is justified by grace alon… Continue

Conversations

As I rode the train this morning to work, I paused for a moment from reading my book as a warm thought swept through my mind in the Chicago morning sunshine. I have started to view this place as a community. I have started to appreciate the vastness of its people. This isn't a city of just skyscrapers and "slums" (I hate that word). This is a network of amazing, thriving people. This city has faces. Those faces have names. Those names are called to vocation in this world.

I think there's an ama… Continue
