ELCA World Hunger is sponsoring a Region 1 leadership training event on the ethics of eating. World Hunger is inviting a diverse group of about fifteen participants from Region 1 (synods: Alaska (1A), Northwest Washington (1B), Southwestern, Washington (1C), Eastern Washington-Idaho (1D), Oregon (1E), and
Montana (1F).
We'll think about ways to respond to the justice and lifestyle issues that arise from the interconnections between what we eat and the food distribution system in this country.
ELCA World Hunger is underwriting the cost of participation.
These issues will be explored from this theological perspective: how should we eat such that it is just, and healthy for ourselves and the environment? We'll ask this question with respect to organic and conventional farming, and their relation to hunger, worker rights, and the environment. Afterwards, each participant is expected to host an event of their choice in their local area.
We will have discussions and presentations on these issues and engage local farmers, farm workers, and activists. We will then brainstorm about how this thinking should inform the work of the church, particularly around these areas – advocacy, organizing, fundraising, education and the lifestyle of members of the church.
If you have any questions or to obtain an application, please do not hesitate to contact Romelia Almaraz at 773-380-2696 or Romelia.Almaraz@elca.org.
